Course Reserves (for Students)

Faculty, TA and Academic Staff questions | Student questions

1. Where is Rotch Library?

On the second floor of Building 7, Room 238.

2. How do I pick up a reserve material for my class?

Go to the main circulation desk at Rotch Library and tell the staff member the Call # of the item you need. If you are looking for something without a call #, such as a course reader, let us know the course number and professor’s name.

3. How can I find out what is on reserve for my class?

You can search for reserves by course number or your professor’s name in the Barton Library catalog. Click on the link that says “Reserves” at the top of the Barton screen or click here.

4. How many reserve items can I check out at once?

Two.

5. How long can I borrow I reserve item?

Most items can be borrowed for 2 hours. This is so everyone in the class has a chance to use them.

6. Can I renew a reserve item?

As long as it is not needed by someone else, you can renew a reserve item up to 3 times using Your Account or by calling the Rotch Library circulation desk (617-258-5592).

7. Can I have a reserve item held for me?

No, they are primarily available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If an item is particularly popular we may block it from being renewed, however it still cannot be held for a specific person.

8. What if I check out or renew a reserve item less than 2 hours before the library closes?

The book will be due back the following day 1 hour after the library opens.

9. What happens if I return an item late?

You will be fined $2 per hour (rounded up) for each hour the book is overdue. There is a short grace period before the fines begin to accrue.

10. Can I return a reserve item to another library?

No, they must be returned to Rotch.

11. Can I put reserve items in the book drop when the library is closed?

Sure, but if it’s particularly large or fragile, return it at the desk if possible. Only return Rotch reserve items to the book drop outside Rotch Library.

12. Have other questions?

Stop by the Rotch Library circulation desk or email rotch-res@mit.edu.
