Dewey will be closed on Saturday July 25th due to construction but will be open for our usual hours on Sunday. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Work on 1st floor has begun
Now that the semester has ended, renovation work on Dewey’s 1st floor is underway. The 1st floor work will be done in two phases beginning with right side of the library. This area ( including the 1st floor men’s room) will be walled off until mid-July. The right half will then be opened up and the left half (including the 1st floor women’s room) will close until late August.
Great new study space at Dewey!
The second phase of Dewey’s renovation has completely transformed the lower level! Come stroll down the new staircase to study at one of the 30+ new carrels. Dual outlets at each carrel, abundant lighting, and adjustable seating make it prime study space. Check it out!
Tell us what you think either via email or by filling out a comment card at the library.
The final phase of the project, to renovate Dewey’s 1st floor, will begin in June and is scheduled for completion by September. Dewey will continue to be open for business as usual throughout the project.
Renovated lower level to open next week
The renovation of Dewey’s lower level is almost completed and we anticipate opening it up to the community on Monday May 4th at noon. The lower level will soon hold items with the call numbers JS through Z, journals, and microforms. We’ve started moving items downstairs so please ask at the desk if you can’t find something!
2nd floor is open!
Please come by and check out the beautifully renovated 2nd floor of the library! It’s the perfect place to study quietly with your laptop in one of our newly-refinished, power-enabled carrels, or with your classmates in one of the nine brand new group study rooms. In addition to the increased collection capacity and additional work space, some things to notice are:
- shelving end panels made of compressed sunflower seeds
- water-conserving fixtures in bathrooms
- cork floor tiles and door drops on group study rooms make 2nd floor much quieter
- energy-efficient lighting automatically turns on when you enter the room
- improved security with panic buttons in bathrooms connected directly to campus police
- bathroom counters made of recycled glass and concrete
- new, large white boards in each study room
- brighter, more open space
Further enhancements, such as LCD screens in all study rooms, will be completed over the next several weeks, so stay tuned for updates.
2nd floor men’s and women’s room switch
If you are used to studying on Dewey’s 2nd floor, please note the men’s and women’s restrooms have swapped places. The switch was necessary to provide handicapped accessibility as well as meet building code for the current demographics at the Institute. The new locations are not the only changes to the restrooms, they are more energy and water efficient and look terrific. We think you’ll really like the improvements!
2nd floor renovation on schedule
While there is still much to be completed, significant progress has been made. Demolition is finished, framing, drywalling and electrical work is underway, and the shelving installation is over the halfway point. Take a look at the Photos tab to see what’s been happening. Still to come is the ceiling and lighting work, bathroom tiling and plumbing, installation of the new flooring, and painting. Despite the long to-do list, we’re on schedule to reopen the 2nd floor in a few weeks!
2nd floor update – Demolition has begun!
The renovation is officially underway! Demolition on the 2nd floor started last week and will continue into the beginning of January. Installation of the tracks for the compact shelving started today and the rough framing of the new group study rooms begins next week. We’ll post more progress updates in January.
